Green Kid Activities abound at the Better Living Show

Portland General Electric is thrilled with the company’s involvement in the 2010 Energy Trust Better Living Show: a focus on better living concepts for the utility’s customers all based around energy.

“To have a show like this in Portland that is free and accessible to everyone is a great thing for us to support because we want all our customers to be more sustainable and use energy wisely,” says Kregg Arntson, PGE’s manager of community affairs.

PGE is a sponsor of the Better Living Show’s Planet Kids, an educational forum based around energy savings and sustainability that uses entertainment aimed at kids and families. “PGE spends a lot of time and resources on educating kids about energy efficiency and safety around electricity,” says Arntson. “The Planet Kids area is a great connection for us to do that.”

One aspect of this effort is PGE’s Bright Ideas Contest.“Kids between 5 and 17 can either draw a picture or take a picture with a camera depicting how their family saves energy, bring it to the Better Living Show and enter to win some great prizes,” he said. Those prizes include compact fluorescent light bulbs for everyone who enters. A grand prize will be offered in three categories and include a home energy audit from the Energy Trust of Oregon; energy efficient shower heads; and depending upon the age category of the entrant a chance to win a Nintendo DS, an I-pod Nano or a Flip video camcorder.

“It’s our way of engaging kids and families to get onto PGE’s website and talk about energy efficiency, and show how their families are energy efficient,” says Arntson. For more details, go to www.portlandgeneral.com/betterliving.

Other activities happening at PGE’s Planet Kids center include an interactive “energy to share” show by Mad Science; Salmon & Safari, a fish tale about one of the Northwest’s oldest native inhabitants; story time inside the U.S. Forest Service’s inflatable fish; and Radio Disney with interactive activities that center around Oregon Adventure stressing grow local, shop local, eat local, plus children’s musical performances and other exhibits and shows.
