Portland’s favorite harmonizing sisters and recipients of the 2009 Portland Music Awards “Band of the Year” award, Jenni and Amanda Price are the driving force behind Acoustic Minds. They can burn up a stage with Indigo Girls-like power anthems, acoustic jazz/blues picking and smoldering gospel-like testifying, or sophisticated rhythms and adult contemporary singer-songwriting.   Producers of a monthly performance of incredible female vocalists, Jenni and Amanda share the stage with up and coming as well as established artists through their event “Sirens in the Round” every third Monday at Club 915.  SWAN Day PDX is thrilled to have Acoustic Minds kicking off our celebration of female artists as they celebrate the release of their newest CD, AM Radio, on this same day! Joining them on stage will be vocalist Laura Ivancie and percussionist Beth Rhodes.

THEATER PERFORMANCE

Sharon Sassone

http://www.shashasassone.com

Sharon Sassone, also known as ShaSha, is an award-winning playwright, actor, and director who was artistic director of A Stage of One's Own Theatre Company in Chicago for ten years.  A founding member of the acclaimed Chicago Dramatists Workshop, she founded the Portland Dramatists Workshop (PDW) after moving here in 1997 to be near her sons and grandchildren.  At present, the PDW meets on alternating Saturday afternoons at the Watershed PDX.  ShaSha is currently working on her play "Fort Vancouver" about a young, pre-Civil War Captain Ulysses S. Grant who takes Providence Hospital founder Mother Joseph on a begging tour to the northwest gold mines.  ShaSha was awarded the Oregon Literary Arts Fellowship for Drama for her play "Hebrew Lessons" about a retired American couple who move to Israel to give back by teaching Hebrew to Russian immigrants.  ShaSha has a novel-in-progress (that was complimented by Saul Bellow, but that's another story) about an ignored girl growing up wild in Chicago in the 50's and 60's.  To read the beginning of the novel "Tales From the Old Neighborhood," and to learn more about ShaSha and the PDW, go to her website at shashasassone.comCome hear ShaSha participate in the discussion about Women in Creative Fields, Sunday 3/28 at 1:00, and then see her perform from "The Conditions of Unconditional Love" at 4:00.

In "Conditions of Unconditional Love," a grandmother is forced to face the fact that her teenaged grandchild may have stolen the money to buy a cell phone.  Many people talk about unconditional love, but is it really?  Sassone uses humor to explore such questions as "Don't we all have lines that can't be crossed and expectations that can't be ignored?  What's a grandmother to do to keep her family on the right track and their love as strong as it can be?"

Creative Advocacy Network (CAN)

http://theartscan.org/

While many consider Portland to be an epicenter of creativity, public funding for the arts in our region is well below that of other comparable metropolitan areas and many of our school districts can no longer afford arts and music programming for our children. Arm in arm with business, arts, education and local government, CAN will establish a regional $15-$20 million annual public fund for the arts and arts education in the next 2-5 years.

The Creative Advocacy Network (CAN) is a 501(c)3 organization established to mobilize the Portland Metropolitan Region in support of a new public fund for the arts and engage the region’s elected, arts, education and business leaders in readying this proposed funding package for the ballot in the next two to five years.  Come talk with volunteers from CAN at SWAN Day PDX to learn more about this initiative and how you can get involved.

VISUAL ARTISTS

Reetika Agarwal Oil Painting

Reetika Agarwal

www.reetart.com

I was raised in India and lived there for more than two decades before moving to Portland, Oregon. I grew up in a home where all the arts were nurtured and valued. It was my husband who rekindled my desire to become part of a world “inside the frame”. I have always felt an attraction to the natural world; it's constantly changing forms and the abstracts. The challenge for me is to capture the joy and magic of the creative images which my mind longs to express through paint and canvas. The strong sense of color is evident in all of my artwork. My medium of choice is oil color. Oils allow me to show the full depth and vibrancy of the colors that I see in my mind’s eye. I hope that the art I create brings to others the same joy I experience in painting the picture.

I make intricate paper cutouts by hand, from pictures I take and from my own original art. Some of my paper cutouts cast shadows on the walls from custom frames (by Jesse Fowler) they are presented in. I love the idea of negative spaces and the simplicity of vagueness. Although I enjoy running wild with my own creative ideas, I am interested in creating portraits, personalized, or custom commissioned pieces.

Jessica Israel

I was born and raised in the rainy greens of Portland, Oregon, and was drawn to color and form at an early age.  I began taking pictures as a teenager in art class.  I am new again to the world of art, as I have only recently begun to produce pieces and show them.  Travel and color have been the constant theme in this current body of work.  I live in the high desert of Bend, Oregon now, where the sun and snow nourish my soul.

Harriet Levi

Harriet Kaufman Levi

After 21 years of teaching at Clark College, where I established and taught in the Women's Studies Dept., I finally have time to be an artist. I took my first art class in 2001, and began showing my work about 4 years later.  I am very active in the Oregon Women's Caucus for Art, and am co-chair of the Art Wall at the First Unitarian Church. I am also the art editor for the online Oregon Literary Journal. My work has been shown in Portland, Korea, and Tacoma.  I love exploring different kinds of art, and I have incorporated my early theatre experience as a designer by making shadow boxes, which "stage" my paintings, and include three dimensional elements. My current passion is exploring what it means to be an abstract artist.

Suzan Mayer

Suzan Mayer has been an artist from childhood. She was born in and lived
in Portland all her life. She received her B.A. from Reed College/Portland Art Museum’s Joint Program and an M.S.W. from Portland State University’s School of Social
Work. Recently she has been able to work intensively in various and new directions of art and craft.  She is especially appreciative of the help received by belonging to the Oregon Women's Caucus for Art. We live to make art and to share with all people who love art.

ABOUT SWAN DAY AND THE FUND FOR WOMEN ARTISTS

The first SWAN Day took place in 2008 on the last Saturday of March, Women’s History Month, and was observed with over 160 events in 11 countries. It serves to unite women artists with their audiences and supporters, and to create a powerful alliance to ensure women’s voices are heard. “The focus of this day is to celebrate the women artists who are creating change in their communities and around the world", said Martha Richards, the co-founder of SWAN Day.

The annual, world-wide event is organized by The Fund for Women Artists, a San Francisco based non-profit arts organization that offers networking, fundraising and advocacy services to over 500,000 visitors a year. It is founded on the belief that women artists have the power to change the way women are perceived in our society and is dedicated to helping women artists get the resources they need to do their creative work.
